Achieving net-zero outcomes requires addressing both operational energy and embodied carbon through an integrated design process. In this final course of the seven-part series, we demonstrate how these objectives can be implemented in practice through an in-depth case study of the Mount Vernon Library Commons, one of the first publicly bid Phius-certified public buildings in the United States. Participants will explore how the project team established measurable energy and carbon targets, selected appropriate analysis tools, and translated performance goals into design and construction decisions.
The course examines strategies used, including passive building design and certification (also referred to as passive house) with Phius (Passive House Institute US), a high-performance building envelope, energy modeling, daylight harvesting, renewable energy integration, and embodied carbon reduction, to produce this comfortable, resilient, low-carbon building.
Each course of this seven-part series may be taken individually.
