Description:
Many people are captivated by birds, and they play an essential role in nearly every ecosystem. However, millions of birds collide with glass and die every year, significantly impacting avian populations and the surrounding environment. This course explores how bird-friendly building design can help mitigate this problem by examining how birds perceive their environment and how building shape, materials, and lighting contribute to collisions. Participants will review bird-friendly materials and design strategies, along with examples of bird-friendly glass, that support both bird safety and occupant well-being. The course also discusses existing legislation mandating bird-safe construction and outlines the bird-friendly glass option in the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction (BD+C) Biodiverse Habitat credit (SSc1).
